A simile to better understand the difference and interaction between skills and competencies

The trolley and professional skills

Hard skills the baggage, soft skills the means to carry them

To make the difference between hard skills (knowledge) and soft skills (abilities) clear, we can use the image of the trolley.

Often, when we acquire technical skills, we talk about professional baggage. This baggage, over the years, becomes heavier and heavier, and it becomes difficult to manage what has been learned the more it grows.

This is where skills come into play: they enable technical knowledge to be managed to the fullest.  They result, then, as the means to effectively carry the baggage of the knowledges.

THE “PROFESSIONAL BAGGAGE” (the knowledge acquired through study and experience) NEEDS “A MEANS” TO MAKE IT PROLIFE (the skills) ONLY THROUGH THE SYNERGY BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DOES EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE ORIGINATE BUT THE SKILLS ARE ALWAYS BECOMING MORE AND MORE OF A SUCCESS FACTOR.
